Atmospheric condensed-phase reactions of glyoxal with methylamine

چکیده
[1] Glyoxal reacts withmethylamine in drying cloud droplet/ aerosol surrogates to form high molecular mass oligomers along with smaller amounts of 1,3-dimethylimidazole and light-absorbing compounds. The patterns observed by highresolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry indicate that oligomers form from repeated imine units. The reactions are 1st order in each reactant: rate-limiting imine formation is followed by rapid dimer and oligomer formation. While excess methylamine evaporates from the droplet, half the glyoxal does not, due to self-oligomerization reactions that occur in the absence of methylamine. Glyoxal irreversibly traps volatile amine compounds in the aerosol phase, converting them into oligomers. This is the first reported mechanism for the formation of stable secondary organic aerosol (SOA) material from methylamine, a substance with only one carbon, and could produce as much as 11 Tg SOA yr 1 globally if glyoxal reacts exclusively by this pathway. Secondary organic aerosol formation by heterogeneous reactions of aldehydes and ketones: a quantum mechanical study.
Experimental studies have provided convincing evidence that aerosol-phase heterogeneous chemical reactions (possibly acid-catalyzed) are involved to some extent in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). We present a stepwise procedure to determine physical properties such as heats of formation, standard entropies, Gibbs free energies of formation, and solvation energies from quantum ...

This study presents a modeling framework based on laboratory data to describe the kinetics of glyoxal reactions that form secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in aqueous aerosol particles. Recent laboratory results on glyoxal reactions are reviewed and a consistent set of empirical reaction rate constants is derived that captures the kinetics of glyoxal hydration and subsequent reversible and irreve...

The reaction of CH₃NH₂ with O₂ on the singlet potential energy surfaces (PES) was carried out using the B3LYP, CCSD(T) and G3B3 theoretical approaches along with 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. The suggested mechanism for the title reaction consists of one pre-reactive complex. From the pre-reactive complex, nine types of products, CH2NH+H2O2, CH3NH+OOH,...

Aqueous-phase photooxidation of glyoxal, a ubiquitous water-soluble gas-phase oxidation product of many compounds, is a potentially important global and regional source of oxalic acid and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Reaction kinetics and product analysis are needed to validate and refine current aqueous-phase mechanisms to facilitate prediction of in-cloud oxalic acid and SOA formation fro...

Particles in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UT/LS) consist mostly of concentrated sulfuric acid (40-80 wt %) in water. However, airborne measurements have shown that these particles also contain a significant fraction of organic compounds of unknown chemical composition. Acid-catalyzed reactions of carbonyl species are believed to be responsible for significant transfer of gas ph...
